J100055 London General Post Lot J100055 "7/Off" type L65g on reverse of letter sheet dated "10th October 1671" from Charles 2nd Lord Cornwallis of Eye to his cousin and addressed "ffor ye Honourable ye Lady Mary Heveringham at Tinmouth Castle neare Newcastle, Northumberl". Leave this at ye Post House in Newcastle. Lady Heveringham was the wife of the Regicide William Heveringham, she was imprisoned at Tynemouth Castle during 1671. The "7/Off" stamp was struck weakly with the Bishop Mark for "OC/10" clear, but slightly smudged adjacent. See page 12 for an earlier example of the same correspondence. Addressee missing from front, but portion remaining reads "To be putt in Lichfield Bagg to be left at Sand Cross". Letter dated 9th November 1675 and bears a Bishop Mark for "NO/9" with reversed "N" adjacent to "OFF/4". £400.00
